The Soul Of John Black is the nom de musique of John Bigham, whose impressive resume includes a stint as percussionist with the Miles Davis band, eight years of guitar and keyboard work with the pioneering rock-funk-ska band Fishbone, and touring and session work with Dr. Dré, Eminem, Nikka Costa, Bruce Hornsby and Everlast, just to name a few.
It's blues for a new generation, crafted by a mature spirit who is adept at acoustic, electric, and slide guitars as well as soulful singing. With a laid back, but focused approach to live gigs, Bigham’s arrangements blend blues, folk, funk, rock, country, classic soul, gospel and world music, thus bringing the blues up to date without sacrificing authenticity.
“The Soul of John Black uncovers a stripped bare but solid little band fusing soul, blues-rock and hip-hop flavas.” The Philadelphia Daily News

"I see a different kind of discourse going on by taking away the fourth wall and losing that distance between the performer and the audience - which can be a 20-foot gap with an orchestra pit."
"In a more intimate space, the audience is remarkably close to the performance. That enables the audience to physically and visually experience the work in a whole new way."
- Peter G. Kalivas

The Insomniacs seemed to literally explode onto the scene out of nowhere in 2007 as a fully formed and functional unit delighting audiences with their joyous, yet highly contagious musical sound and irresistible sense of swing. Their self-produced debut release “Left Coast Blues”, recorded in the living room of bassist Dean Mueller’s house, was quickly snatched up and issued on Delta Groove Music, hitting a peak position of No. 5 on the national Living Blues radio charts. Critical praise and industry recognition from the blues community soon followed garnering the band a 2008 Blues Music Award nomination for Best New Artist Debut, as well as a 2007 Muddy Award presented by the Cascade Blues Association for Best Contemporary Blues Act.
They play vintage instruments and channel a blues style from the 1950s, but there is a distinct new cyberspace bent to Delta Groove’s blues award winning quartet.
