Company is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth. The original 1970 production, starring Dean Jones, was nominated for 14 Tony Awards, winning six. One of the first to tackle contemporary themes of dating, marriage, and divorce, Company is a concept musical without a linear plot. The story follows bachelor Bobby, who, on his 35th birthday, is surrounded by his married friends at a party. As he blows out the candles, Bobby struggles to make a wish, uncertain whether he should remain content with his bachelor life or desire a romantic partner. Through a series of dinner parties, first dates, and insightful conversations, Bobby navigates the complexities of marriage and bachelorhood. A groundbreaking and witty exploration of relationships, vulnerability, and "being alive," Company remains a mature and intelligent look at human connections.
